Opposition Leader Seeks Supreme Court Review of May 9 Trials in Pakistan

Omar Ayub Khan, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, has raised concerns about the trials related to the May 9 violence in Pakistan. He wrote to Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, highlighting the threat to the integrity of the judicial process. According to him, these trials have turned into a tool for political persecution rather than delivering justice.

Ayub expressed dismay over the rushed and unfair proceedings taking place in anti-terrorism courts in various cities. He criticized the lack of basic principles of a fair trial, including the right to prepare a defense and the impartiality of the judiciary.

He pointed out instances of police misconduct, fabrication of reports, and denial of legal representation rights. Ayub emphasized the importance of upholding fair trial standards and constitutional guarantees.

He urged the Chief Justice to intervene and ensure that ongoing trials comply with fair trial principles. He also called for transparency, media access, and a judicial inquiry into alleged misconduct by police and prosecutors.

Justice Afridi was urged to uphold the rule of law and prevent the judiciary from being used for political agendas or oppression.
