Dublin's Former Neary’s Pub and Hotel Set for Revival After 20 Years

The former Neary’s pub and hotel at 77-78 Parnell Street has been vacant for at least 20 years. The redevelopment of this notorious derelict building in Dublin is now set to proceed after Dublin City Council became the legal owner following the resolution of an ownership dispute.

The building, a protected structure, dates back to the 1850s and has been vacant for two decades. It was previously taken over by squatters in 2015 and was known as the Barricade Inn before being evicted in 2016 due to safety concerns.

The council acquired the property under the Derelict Sites Act in May 2024 after a series of legal challenges. The building is now under consideration for future use and development.

A special purpose vehicle (SPV) recommended by the Taoiseach’s Dublin taskforce is expected to be established to regenerate derelict inner-city buildings, with a focus on the O’Connell Street area.

Green Party councillor Janet Horner sees the potential for the SPV to develop Neary’s and other derelict sites for housing and commercial purposes, aiming to address the city's housing crisis.

Future plans for Neary’s are currently being evaluated by the council.
