Norwegian Olympic medalist Audun Grønvold tragically passes away from lightning strike

The 2010 Olympic ski cross medalist Audun Grønvold has passed away after being struck by lightning, as announced by the Norwegian ski federation. He was 49 years old. Grønvold had won a bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The federation expressed deep sorrow at the news of Grønvold's sudden death, stating that he was struck by lightning during a cabin trip. Despite receiving prompt medical attention for the injuries sustained in the incident, Grønvold passed away on Tuesday night.

Originally part of Norway's alpine skiing team, Grønvold transitioned to freestyle and ski cross. He achieved a podium finish as a World Cup alpine skier, securing third place in a downhill event in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999. Additionally, he claimed a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships and won the overall ski cross cup in 2007. Following his retirement, he served as a national-team coach and a TV commentator.

Tove Moe Dyrhaug, the president of the federation, described Grønvold as a significant figure in Norwegian skiing, emphasizing his impact on both the Alpine and freestyle communities. His passing has left a significant void in the sport.

Grønvold is survived by his wife and three children. His wife, Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå, shared on Facebook that he was her beloved partner for two decades and that the tragic incident occurred during their summer vacation.
