The broadcaster was contacted by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a division of the Department of Justice that monitors online threats to the State. An RTÉ spokesman stated that they are currently reviewing information received from the NCSC and assessing its veracity.

The NCSC was alerted to a threat that may target several state bodies with an expiry deadline of August 4th, potentially involving as many as seven bodies. Sources indicate that RTÉ may be one of the organizations targeted and has been advised accordingly. While there is not a high level of alarm over the threat, the exact nature of the threat, including a possible ransomware element, is yet to be determined.

Last year, the head of the NCSC warned of an increased risk of significant cyber attacks in Ireland. In 2023, the NCSC received over 5,200 reports resulting in 721 confirmed incidents and 309 investigations, with the majority being of lower severity. The Department of Justice spokesperson mentioned that the NCSC does not comment on operational matters.

Following a cyber attack on the HSE in 2021, there has been a heightened focus on the State's cyber security defenses. The attack caused system outages, data breaches, and substantial costs to address, leading to over 470 legal actions as of last year.
