Tsunami waves triggered by the earthquake off Russia on Wednesday, July 30, may affect 22 provinces. Coastal areas in Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao facing the Pacific Ocean could experience tsunami waves less than 1 meter high following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia on July 30. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated that the initial tsunami waves may reach between 1:20 pm and 2:40 pm on Wednesday (Manila time). These waves may not be the largest and could persist for hours. The 22 provinces that may be impacted include Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao de Oro. Phivolcs advised residents in these provinces to stay away from the beach and avoid the coast. Those living near the shoreline should move further inland. Owners of boats in harbors or shallow coastal waters were urged to secure their vessels and move away from the waterfront. Individuals already at sea were advised to remain offshore in deep waters until further notice.
