A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami warnings and evacuations in Japan, the US west coast, and the Pacific. The shallow quake caused waves up to four meters high in the region.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 19.3km and was centered 126km south-east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. A tsunami of 3 to 4 meters hit parts of Kamchatka, causing injuries.
The US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for Russia, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Micronesia. Japan ordered over 900,000 residents to evacuate along the Pacific coast.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of up to 3m tsunami waves, but only 40cm waves were recorded. Workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant were evacuated as a precaution.
The Pacific Ring of Fire, including Kamchatka and Japan, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Earlier in July, Kamchatka experienced five powerful quakes.
