18-Year-Old Arrested for Fatal Shooting at University of New Mexico
An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged in a shooting at the University of New Mexico that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy. The incident occurred while young people were playing video games inside a dorm room.

A shooting inside a dorm room at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque early Friday morning left a 14-year-old boy dead and another teen wounded, state police said. The suspect, 18-year-old John Fuentes, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.
According to the initial investigation, the shooting occurred while four young people were playing video games in the dorm room. The suspect started shooting at the others in the room, resulting in the death of the 14-year-old victim and injuries to a 19-year-old.
University police responded to the incident after receiving alarm calls and reports of gunshots. The suspect was apprehended later, and the university issued a shelter-in-place order that was lifted by the afternoon. The incident occurred during new student orientation, causing shock and sadness in the UNM community.
John Fuentes remains in custody and will be booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center. The tragic event highlights the need to address gun violence and historical trauma in the state.
