NASA Astronaut Kate Rubins Retires After Pioneering DNA Sequencing in Space

NASA astronaut and microbiologist Kate Rubins retired after 16 years with the agency. Rubins completed two long-duration missions aboard the International Space Station, spending 300 days in space and conducting four spacewalks.

During her time at NASA, Rubins contributed to over 275 scientific experiments, including molecular and cellular biology research. She was the first person to sequence DNA in space, enabling advancements in molecular diagnostics and biology tools.

Rubins also worked on new experiments during her second mission in 2020, focusing on heart research and microbiology studies. She continued her DNA sequencing work, aiming to diagnose illness and identify microbes in space.

Aside from her flight assignments, Rubins guided crew health and biomedical research strategy at NASA. She also helped develop lunar spacesuits for future Moon missions.

Before becoming an astronaut, Rubins earned degrees in molecular biology and cancer biology. She currently serves as an innovation officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Rubins, a frequent speaker on space biology and exploration, remains dedicated to advancing innovation in biology, technology, and space.
