Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Fatal Drink-Driving Crash

Martin Green, 36, of Beech Avenue, in Lowton, has been jailed for causing the death of his friend, Jonathan 'Jonny' Mennell, 35, in a tragic car crash. Green was driving at grossly excessive speeds under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of his car, crashing into a wooded area close to Mere Road. Jonny died at the scene due to his injuries.

Merseyside Police gathered evidence showing Green driving at speeds well above the legal limits before the fatal crash on June 10 last year. CCTV footage revealed Green driving at 99 mph in a 40 mph zone and later at 121 mph in a 30 mph zone just moments before the collision. Green's blood sample, taken hours after the crash, indicated he was over the legal alcohol limit.

Green pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to eight years in prison. Detective Sergeant Andy Roper emphasized the devastating impact of Green's reckless decisions on both families involved. He urged against driving under the influence and at excessive speeds to prevent such tragic outcomes.

Jonny's family expressed deep sadness over his passing, remembering him as a beloved son, father, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend who brought joy to everyone he knew.
