Tsunami Advisory Cancelled for B.C. After Major Russian Earthquake

A tsunami advisory issued for all zones has been cancelled by Emergency Info BC following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake in the Far East region of Russia. The update was provided at 6:07 a.m. Pacific daylight time (PDT) by the agency that offers response and recovery information during emergencies.

The advisory was initially issued after the earthquake on Tuesday night local time, with potential tsunami waves expected to impact parts of Canada, the U.S., and Japan. Observations by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported maximum tsunami heights of six centimetres at Langara Island, with Winter Harbour, Tofino, and Bamfield experiencing waves of 27 cm, 21 cm, and nine cm respectively.

Japan's Meteorological Agency detected a tsunami as high as 40 cm in 16 locations along the Pacific coast as the waves moved south. Various countries issued tsunami watches, advisories, and warnings, some of which have been downgraded in Hawaii, Japan, and other parts of Russia as of Wednesday morning.

A tsunami warning is the most severe alert, while an advisory, like the one in place for parts of B.C., indicates the potential for strong currents, dangerous waves, and flooding on beaches or in harbours. The earthquake is believed to be the strongest recorded since the 2011 Japan earthquake that triggered a massive tsunami. While several people were injured in Russia, no deaths have been reported so far.
