A source stated that President Trump always speaks directly with the head of state before finalizing a trade deal with a major economy, and India is expected to follow the same protocol.

Mr. Trump's desire to speak with Mr. Modi has been communicated to New Delhi, and preparations are being made for a potential call while Mr. Modi is engaged in the Monsoon session of Parliament.

During his return from Europe, President Trump confirmed that the India deal is still pending and mentioned that India has been a good friend. He acknowledged the possibility of higher tariffs for India under the new framework.
