NSW MP Jailed for Sexual Abuse Convictions
Gareth Ward, a NSW MP, has been sent to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing two young men. The judge ordered his imprisonment despite concerns about his safety in jail and his poor vision due to a medical condition.
A NSW MP, Gareth Ward, was jailed after being found guilty of sexually abusing two young men. Ward, 44, was convicted of sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault charges. Judge Kara Shead ordered his imprisonment ahead of sentence. Ward's barrister requested bail due to his high profile and poor vision from oculocutaneous albinism. The offences involved inviting an 18-year-old man to his home in 2013 and assaulting a political staffer in 2015.
NSW Premier Chris Minns called for Ward's resignation after the guilty verdict. Ward, who held the Kiama electorate since 2011, faces a possible expulsion from parliament. He can still appeal the convictions.
