Members of the public in Singapore can now dispose of vapes in new bins placed within community centres without facing penalties. The initiative, called 'Bin The Vape,' was launched on July 25 by the Ministry of Health, Health Sciences Authority (HSA), and People’s Association.
These bins are currently available at 23 community clubs (CCs) and one residents’ network centre across the island. More bins will be placed in other locations, including institutes of higher learning.
The authorities highlighted the presence of etomidate, a listed poison in vapes, and announced that it will soon be classified as a Class C illegal drug. They urged e-vaporiser users, especially those consuming etomidate, to give up the habit voluntarily.
Using, possessing, or buying vapes can result in a fine of up to $2,000. However, individuals who dispose of their vapes voluntarily will not face any action from the authorities.
The red disposal bins resemble regular trash bins but are equipped with locks, chains, and CCTV cameras to ensure secure and confidential disposal of vapes. To locate the nearest bin, the public can visit go.gov.sg/bin-vapes.
The initiative aims to encourage vape users to quit before facing legal consequences. The idea for these bins originated from the 'Drop it, Stop it!' anti-vape campaign by MacPherson Youth Network in 2023.
Individuals seeking help to quit vaping can join HPB’s I Quit programme by calling the QuitLine on 1800-438-2000. The hotline to report vaping-related offences now operates from 9am to 9pm daily, including public holidays.
