Penguin Ensures Proper Checks Before Releasing The Salt Path

Publishing house Penguin has said it undertook all necessary due diligence before releasing The Salt Path, following claims about the book's accuracy. A recent Observer investigation alleged that author Raynor Winn fabricated or misrepresented some elements of her 2018 best-seller. Penguin Michael Joseph stated it had a contract with Winn regarding factual accuracy and had not received concerns prior to the Observer's story. Winn defended herself, calling the article 'highly misleading' and mentioning legal advice.

The Salt Path recounts a couple's journey along the South West Coast Path after losing their home. The Observer claimed discrepancies in how the couple lost their home, stating it was due to fraud rather than a bad business deal as described in the book. Medical experts questioned the husband's condition as portrayed in the book. Penguin stated they had done pre-publication due diligence and had not received prior concerns about the book's content.

Winn responded, emphasizing that the book reflects their true journey. The Salt Path has sold over two million copies and has a film adaptation starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs.
