Hong Kong Police Issue Arrest Warrants for Australian Citizen Feng Chongyi and Other Foreign Nationals
Hong Kong police have issued arrest warrants for 19 foreign nationals, including Australian citizen Feng Chongyi, accusing them of national security crimes. The activists, wanted for their involvement with a pro-democracy group, are not planning to return to Hong Kong or mainland China. The arrest warrants have sparked condemnation from Australian and UK politicians.

An Australian man, Feng Chongyi, has been identified as one of 19 foreign nationals wanted by Hong Kong authorities through WhatsApp messages. The activists, accused of national security crimes, were associated with a pro-democracy group called Hong Kong Parliament. Hong Kong police have offered rewards ranging from $HK200,000 to $HK1 million for their arrest. The warrants come in the wake of political unrest and protests in Hong Kong following the imposition of national security laws by Beijing in 2020.
Dr. Feng, who was detained in China in 2017, dismissed the arrest warrant as 'ridiculous' and stated that he had no intention of returning to China or Hong Kong. He criticized the Chinese regime for controlling Hong Kong and eroding its autonomy and basic liberties. Dr. Feng, known for his pro-democracy efforts, emphasized his support for democracy in Hong Kong.
Australia has strongly objected to the arrest warrants, with Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong expressing concerns over the application of Hong Kong's national security legislation. Opposition spokesperson Michaelia Cash reiterated Australia's commitment to free speech and democracy. UK Secretary of State David Lammy condemned the interference in UK affairs as unacceptable.
The bounties issued by Hong Kong police are seen as symbolic, as the activists reside in countries unlikely to extradite them. The police have listed 34 individuals wanted for national security offences on their website.
