Andhra Pradesh to Conduct Exclusive Cancer Survey Due to Low Prevalence

Following the NCD Survey-3 conducted in Andhra Pradesh to assess non-communicable diseases (NCD) prevalence, Minister for Health Satya Kumar Yadav announced the upcoming NCD-4 survey focusing solely on cancer starting in September.

The NCD-3 results revealed low cancer rates in Andhra Pradesh, prompting the need for further investigation through NCD-4. Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in India.

During a workshop in Mangalagiri, Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav mentioned that 70% of the target of screening 4.10 crore people has been completed. Out of 3 crore screened individuals, only 0.35% were diagnosed with oral, breast, or cervical cancer.

Possible reasons for low cancer prevalence include lack of awareness, inadequate skills among health staff, lengthy questionnaires, misconceptions, and lack of coordination among workers.

The NCD-4 survey will address the shortcomings identified in NCD-3 and will commence after the current survey concludes in August.

The Minister, having personal experience with cancer, expressed concern over the 75,000 new cancer cases and 30,000 annual deaths in Andhra Pradesh.
