Increase in Leptospirosis, Hepatitis A, and Dengue Cases in Kozhikode
Kozhikode district has seen a rise in leptospirosis cases with 10 reported cases and four deaths this month. The number of fever cases is also increasing, possibly due to persistent rain and waterlogging. Preventive measures are advised, including taking doxycycline tablets for those in murky water and seeking medical help for symptoms of hepatitis A.

At least 10 cases of leptospirosis and four deaths due to the infection have been reported in Kozhikode district this month. The number of fever cases is also increasing.
According to Health department data, the four deaths were reported from Karassery, Thiruvangur, Chaliyam, and Perumanna. The persistent rain and waterlogging are believed to be contributing factors. An alert was issued in May, warning of a possible spike in leptospirosis cases. People entering murky water are advised to take doxycycline tablets. Those with fever, headache, fatigue, severe muscle pain, or symptoms of hepatitis A should seek medical treatment.
Around 1,000 fever cases are reported daily at hospitals in Kozhikode. Since July 1, nearly 20,000 people have sought treatment for fever at government hospitals. Hepatitis A cases are also reported. Most patients in general wards are suffering from fever. At the Government Medical College Hospital, patients are lying on floors and corridors due to bed shortage. School students are also affected.
