Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus found in Illinois, health officials urge precautions
Health officials in Illinois are warning residents to take precautions after mosquitoes in multiple counties tested positive for the West Nile virus. The virus, transmitted through mosquito bites, can lead to serious illness and even death. Measures such as eliminating standing water and using insect repellent are recommended to prevent infection.

Health officials have issued a warning after a batch of mosquitoes tested positive for the West Nile virus. In late June, mosquitoes in Joliet, Illinois, were found to carry the virus. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported cases in 22 counties. Chicago also had positive cases earlier.
The virus spreads through mosquito bites and can cause fever, headache, body aches, and more. It can be fatal, with 69 cases and 13 deaths in Illinois in 2024. Mosquitoes are becoming more active due to rising temperatures.
To prevent the virus, people are advised to eliminate standing water, use insect repellent, wear long clothing, and more. Some communities are taking steps to reduce mosquito populations.
