Measles Outbreak Spreads Across Canada, Hotspot Map Reveals

The spread of measles within and between provinces in Canada is concerning health officials and doctors. Alberta and Ontario have reported over 3,400 confirmed measles cases this year. Measles is highly contagious and can cause fever, cough, redness of the eyes, and a distinctive rash.

Dr. Joseph Blondeau from Saskatoon warns that the widespread virus increases the risk of transmission at social events. Outbreaks are not limited to specific areas, making vaccination crucial for all individuals.

Dr. Ayisha Kurji emphasizes the importance of vaccination, as two doses of the MMR vaccine provide 97% protection. Manitoba is seeing a rise in measles cases, especially in areas with low vaccination rates.

Efforts are being made to improve access to immunization through home visits, pop-up clinics, and extended hours. Infants in affected provinces are eligible for an early protective dose.

Experts believe that cases are likely underreported, posing a challenge in tracking the true extent of the outbreak. The issue of underreporting is also observed in the U.S., where the death toll from measles is concerning.

Atlantic Canada has varying numbers of measles cases, with B.C. reporting over 120 cases. Yukon, on the other hand, has not reported any cases in 2025.
