Conflict Escalation Leads to Rising Death Toll and Mass Exodus

Both sides have sought diplomatic support to end the conflict, claiming self-defence and urging negotiations. Thailand’s ambassador to the U.N. reported soldiers injured by landmines in Thai territory, leading to Cambodia's attacks. Cambodia stated the landmines were from past conflicts. Thailand urged Cambodia to stop hostilities and resume dialogue. Cambodia denied the claims, accusing Thailand of an unlawful attack and mobilizing troops.

Cambodia asked for immediate ceasefires and a peaceful solution. Thailand wanted to resolve the dispute bilaterally but criticized Cambodia for avoiding dialogue. Cambodia condemned Thailand's use of cluster munitions as a violation of international law. The Security Council called for de-escalation, restraint, and peaceful resolution.

Malaysia, chair of ASEAN, offered to mediate. Australia and Britain issued travel advisories for border regions. Villagers fled as fighting intensified, seeking shelter in Thailand. Evacuees described the violence as frightening and unexpected. Some refused to leave their homes despite the conflict.

Thailand and Cambodia have long disputed their border, with ownership of ancient temples central to the conflicts.
