Russian navy parade cancelled due to security concerns

Russia has cancelled a major annual navy parade citing 'security reasons' without specifying the threat. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized the importance of security, stating that the decision was due to the general situation. The parade was supposed to be the highlight of Russia's Navy Day, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of July each year to honor the country's sailors. However, local authorities in Saint Petersburg announced the cancellation without providing a reason. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who reinstated Navy Day in 2017, did not attend the event in person this year, opting for a video message praising the bravery of Russian sailors involved in the conflict in Ukraine.

Russia initiated a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, leading to daily bombardments. In response, Ukraine launched drone strikes on Russian territory. The Russian defence ministry reported downing 100 Ukrainian drones, with some intercepted near Saint Petersburg resulting in injuries. The drone attack also caused disruptions at Pulkovo airport in Saint Petersburg, leading to flight delays.
