Passengers travelling to Leeds train station face major disruption, with journeys cancelled and two-hour delays.

Weekend plans have been upended for thousands of people after all railway lines in Leeds were shut today due to a signalling system fault.

CrossCountry, LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express all issued a ‘do not travel warning’ to customers today as all lines are blocked.

Services could be axed, and the ones that can run could be delayed by up to two hours.

It is thought that the Leeds station had to close after overcrowding.

National Rail said: ‘A fault with the signalling system in the Leeds area means all lines are closed.

‘No trains are able to run to / from / through Leeds and will be cancelled, delayed by up to 120 minutes, revised or diverted.

‘Leeds station is currently closed.

‘Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.’

One woman said on X that her mum has been stuck in Bradford trying to travel back to Blackpool North.

When she asked Northern about a rail replacement bus, she was told that the team were ‘unable to source rail replacement transport, we have a do not travel notice in place due to no services operating.’

Here are the affected routes:

CrossCountry between Penzance / Plymouth / Bristol Temple Meads and Edinburgh, between Reading and Newcastle, and between Plymouth and Leeds / Glasgow Central

LNER between London Kings Cross and Bradford Forster Square / Skipton / Leeds / Harrogate

Northern between Blackpool North / Blackburn / Leeds and York, between Lancaster / Morecambe / Chester / Wigan Wallgate / Manchester Victoria / Bradford Interchange / Bradford Forster Square / Lincoln / Skipton / Ilkley / Castleford / Knottingley / Halifax / Hull / Goole / Doncaster / Sheffield and Leeds, between Leeds and Harrogate / Knaresborough / York / Ribblehead / Carlisle, and between Halifax / Bradford Interchange and Hull

TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle / Edinburgh, between Hull / Scarborough and Leeds, and between Manchester Victoria and Leeds / York / Scarborough / Saltburn / Redcar Central

Advice to passengers with tickets The advice varies depending on the train operator as not all companies have rail replacement services. CrossCountry CrossCountry said passengers should not travel today ‘unless it is necessary.’ Trains might be diverted via Doncaster, and services will skip Leeds and Wakefield. Tickets will be accepted in two CrossCountry services running before or after your cancelled train, and on LNER, Northern or TransPennine services. However, passengers should note that the other operators are affected too by the Leeds disruption. Road rail replacement has been requested between Doncaster and Leeds, York and, depending on availability, to Wakefield Westgate. Northern Customers are told not to travel. Ticket restrictions have been lifted during the disruption. Northern customer service told several people on X that it has been unable to source rail replacement. Those who paid for alternative transport were told to email receipts to [email protected] to discuss compensation. LNER It has rail replacement buses running between Leeds and Doncaster, and it will be arranged for Bradford Foster Square, Harrogate, York and Leeds. Tickets for Bradford Foster Square, Harrogate, Wakefield Westgate and Leeds today will be valid for use tomorrow. TransPennine Express Passengers should not travel unless necessary if their journey is to, from or via Leeds. Customers should not travel north of Manchester. Although trains are running, the scale of the disruption means trains through Leeds will be ‘heavily delayed’ or there will be ‘severe overcrowding,’ the operator said. Tickets for today will be accepted tomorrow.
