Italian YouTuber Once Were Nerd faces potential criminal charges after Italian authorities seized his Android-based gaming handhelds due to concerns over pirated game ROMs. The devices offer console emulation support but come loaded with illegal content. Once Were Nerd's popular channel could be at risk.

There are numerous Android-powered gaming handhelds that offer console emulation support in addition to regular Android games. However, the legality issue arises from the game ROMs on these devices. Italian YouTuber Once Were Nerd is facing potential criminal charges after authorities confiscated his consoles due to concerns over game piracy.
Once Were Nerd has created content on YouTube covering various gaming topics, including Android-based handheld game machines like Powkiddy and TrimUI. These devices typically run a modified older version of Android optimized for gaming, with built-in emulation support for retro consoles such as SNES, Nintendo 64, PlayStation Portable, and GameCube. The affordability of these devices, priced at $100 or less, has contributed to their popularity.
Recently, Italy's Ministry of Economy and Finance, responsible for copyright enforcement, took notice of Once Were Nerd. In a video, the YouTuber revealed that authorities visited him with a search warrant in April. The creator was accused of promoting pirated copyrighted materials related to Anbernic handheld game consoles. While emulation software itself is legal, many of these devices come pre-loaded with ROMs, including games from Sony and Nintendo.
