Iceland Volcano Erupts, Blue Lagoon Evacuated: Latest Updates

A volcanic eruption in Iceland has led to the evacuation of the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa and surrounding areas. The eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest of Reykjavik, following intense seismic activity. Around 100 people were evacuated from the town of Grindavik, along with tourists at a nearby campsite and guests at the Blue Lagoon. Stay updated for more information.

A second lava fissure has opened in Iceland's Grindavik region, with the first fissure already over 6,500 feet long. The Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its volcanic landscapes, is the site of Keflavik International Airport.

Evacuation orders were issued in southwestern Iceland, including for Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon spa. Iceland, located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has a history of volcanic activity due to tectonic plates drifting apart and a mantle plume beneath the surface.

Wednesday's eruption is the 12th in the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021. The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa rich in minerals, is a popular tourist attraction known for its healing properties and unique setting.

A massive toxic gas cloud is moving towards Iceland's airport after the eruption, posing health risks. Lava flows from the eruption are not expected to impact infrastructure. Residents are advised to monitor air quality and evacuate if necessary.
