Australia's Race Commissioner Raises Concerns Over Antisemitism Plan
Australia's race discrimination commissioner has expressed concerns over the lack of detail in Jillian Segal's plan to combat antisemitism. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding fundamental rights while addressing racism. The government is yet to respond to the plan's recommendations related to universities.

Australia’s race discrimination commissioner has warned about the lack of detail in Jillian Segal’s plan to combat antisemitism and emphasized the need to safeguard fundamental rights and freedoms. Giridharan Sivaraman responded to the envoy’s 20-page plan, which includes recommendations like withholding government funding from universities involved in antisemitism and monitoring media organizations for false narratives.
The government will defer its response to university-related recommendations until reports from the special envoys are released. Sivaraman welcomed a national approach to combat racism but raised concerns about the implementation of Segal’s recommendations and their human rights implications.
He highlighted the need for expert advice to ensure the proposed measures do not restrict essential rights. Some of Segal’s priorities align with the national anti-racism framework, focusing on education and media reforms. Sivaraman expressed interest in collaborating with the envoy to address antisemitism.
The government has not specified which parts of the plan it will adopt, with Labor sources suggesting a focus on education and prevention measures. The Coalition endorsed Segal’s plan but has not detailed its support. The shadow home affairs minister called for a judicial inquiry, visa crackdown, and law enforcement taskforce.
Australia’s special envoy to combat Islamophobia will submit recommendations in August, while an AHRC review on racism at universities is expected in October. Collaboration between Segal and Sivaraman was not clarified in responses to inquiries.
