Google Introduces AI-Generated News Summaries in Discover Feed
Google has started displaying AI-generated news summaries in its Discover feed within the Google Search app. Users in the US are now seeing these summaries instead of traditional headlines and logos from single publishers. The feature aims to streamline the news consumption process and is currently focused on trending lifestyle topics like sports and entertainment.

Google is introducing AI-generated summaries in Discover, its news feed in the Google Search app. Users in the US are now seeing summaries instead of headlines and logos from single publishers on iOS and Android. This change is similar to AI Overviews in Search results and aims to obscure news sources as search traffic to publishers declines.
The AI summaries in Discover show icons in the top-left corner, indicating the number of cited stories. Tapping the icons reveals a 'More' sheet with all contributing articles. Users can preview three lines before expanding the summary by tapping 'See more.' A warning below the text notes that the summaries are AI-generated and may contain mistakes.
This feature has been in development, with bug hunter AndellDam discovering AI Overview-like summaries on Google Discover in June. A Google spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that this is a US launch on iOS and Android, not a test. Google mentioned that the feature will focus on trending lifestyle topics such as sports and entertainment, helping users decide which pages to visit.
