Proposed Changes to WA Public Holidays by Cook Government

The Cook Government is proposing making Easter Saturday a public holiday as part of sweeping changes to the State’s annual calendar. The Government will invite feedback on the Easter Saturday proposal and canvass support for an additional weekday public holiday. The changes would mean West Australians get 13 public holidays a calendar year, bringing the State in line with other states. Other options include moving WA Day to November and aligning Labour Day and King’s Birthday with eastern states. Premier Roger Cook promises no changes will be made without public input, starting a public consultation period today. WA is the only mainland State that does not observe Easter Saturday as a public holiday. WA Day would be held in November, and the King’s Birthday public holiday would be shifted to June. A new public holiday could be created in September. National holidays won’t change. Feedback is invited until August 8.
