Irish EV Owners Share Challenges of Charging in Built-Up Areas
Irish EV owners face difficulties charging their electric or hybrid cars in built-up areas with limited off-street parking. Public charging points are over-subscribed, leading to long waits at anti-social hours. Lack of charging infrastructure and parking spaces are driving some owners back to petrol or diesel vehicles.

We asked our readers to share their experiences of EV charging in Ireland, especially in built-up areas with on-street parking. This followed a report about an EV owner in Dublin 6 asked to remove an unauthorized 'charging arm' by Dublin City Council.
Readers mentioned challenges charging their electric or hybrid cars without off-street parking. They reported public charging points being over-subscribed, leading to waiting at odd hours. Here are some responses:
'We have an EV in Rathmines but can't convert our front garden into a driveway due to restrictions. Public charging points are limited, and efforts to get a Kerbo charge gulley were unsuccessful,' said a resident.
'I see a lack of charging infrastructure in Ireland. I've owned an EV for five years and plan to switch back to petrol or diesel,' shared another Dublin resident.
'I charge my car at public stations due to on-street parking. It's challenging to find a spot, and there's no grant for home chargers,' mentioned a Dublin 8 resident.
'My wife and I face issues with ESB high-power chargers often being out of service,' added a Co Galway resident.
