Rogers Launches Satellite-to-Mobile Text Messaging Service in Canada
Rogers Communications Inc. has introduced a new satellite-to-mobile text messaging service, allowing Canadians to stay connected in remote areas without cell service. The service covers over 5.4 million square kilometers, offering safety and connectivity in previously unreachable locations.

Rogers Communications Inc. has launched a new satellite-to-mobile text messaging service, making them the first wireless provider to offer this technology to Canadians.
Rogers Satellite, which launched on Tuesday, automatically connects phones in areas without cell service. Customers can now send texts in remote locations like the Rocky Mountains, text 911 when stranded on a highway, and stay connected in places like the southern shores of Hudson Bay or the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
President and CEO of Rogers, Tony Staffieri, stated, \"We're proud to introduce this ground-breaking technology to help Canadians stay safe and connected in more places.\" With this new technology, Rogers now covers over 5.4 million square kilometers in Canada, which is 2.5 times more than any other Canadian wireless carrier.
This launch follows Rogers celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first wireless call in Canada. Staffieri mentioned, \"This new technology represents the next big leap in wireless connectivity. We're proud to continue our legacy of innovative firsts and to connect Canadians in more places.\"
Rogers Satellite utilizes low-earth orbit satellites and Rogers' national wireless spectrum. The technology is compatible with most modern smartphones, and the company will continue to optimize the service during the beta trial period.
Canadians can sign up for a free beta trial of Rogers Satellite, which initially supports text messaging and text-to-911. The service will later expand to include apps, data, voice services, and 911 voice services. The beta trial ends in October, after which Rogers Satellite will be included in the Rogers Ultimate Plan at no extra cost. For other Canadians, the service will be available for $15/month.
Rogers is the parent company of this station and its affiliates.
