Diseases, whether communicable or non-communicable, continue to be public health concerns. Cancer, a non-communicable disease, is listed among the leading causes of mortality in the country.

To address this concern, then President Rodrigo Duterte approved Republic Act No. 11215, the National Integrated Cancer Control Act on February 14, 2019. An integrated and comprehensive approach to health development is adopted under the law, which includes strengthening cancer control policies, programs, and services at all levels of the health care system. The aim is to make cancer treatment more equitable, affordable, and improve survivorship.

The 2024-2028 National Integrated Cancer Control Program Strategic Framework aims to enhance capacities for cancer control goals.

Cancer affects all ages, with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) being a common childhood cancer. Survival rates are higher in developed countries compared to less developed ones.

Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko Foundation's Executive Director, Ms. Margo Mercado, shared that the survival rate for ALL in the Philippines has significantly improved over the years. The Batang Kapwa (BK) program was launched in 1989 to provide support to children with ALL and their families.

The program offers financial and emotional assistance to help families cope with the challenges of treatment. It subsidizes medical care, conducts group activities, provides educational support, and promotes early cancer detection.

Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko expanded the BK program last year to include BK graduates. The focus is on helping children and families transition back to normal life after treatment, including addressing mental health needs.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko, the pioneering public health program in the country.
