Walking 7,000 Steps a Day: Big Health Benefits Revealed by Research

People who walk 7,000 steps a day have a significantly lower risk of various health issues, according to a comprehensive review of studies. The commonly known 10,000-step target actually originated from a 1960s marketing campaign. Researchers analyzed 57 studies involving 160,000 individuals to determine that walking 7,000 steps daily can reduce the risk of early death by almost half compared to 2,000 steps. This level of activity was also associated with lower risks of dementia, depression, and diabetes. While reaching 10,000 steps is beneficial, the most significant health gains occur before hitting that target. Adding just 1,000 steps to a daily routine can have positive effects, even for those currently only achieving 2,000-3,000 steps.

Experts emphasize that any increase in physical activity is beneficial, and individuals should not be fixated on specific step counts. The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity per week, a target that a significant portion of the global population fails to meet.
