Raffy Tulfo Pushes for Student Discount Booths at LRT, MRT Stations

Senator Raffy Tulfo has urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to establish dedicated booths or lanes for students who qualify for a 50% fare discount at Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) stations.

Tulfo, chair of the Senate Committee on Public Services, noted that some students forego the discount due to the time-consuming process based on inspections at certain train stations.

Starting June 20, DOTr increased the fare discount for all students, including postgraduate students, to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

Students need to show a valid ID for the current school year at the ticket counter to avail of the discount, applicable only for single journey tickets and not beep cards or stored value tickets.

Tulfo suggested separate booths or lanes exclusively for students to streamline the process and make the discount applicable to beep cards.

Transport Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that MRT-3 stations have already set up dedicated student counters, with LRT-1 and LRT-2 to follow suit.
