Royal Navy's Former Head Dismissed for Relationship with Subordinate Officer

The former head of the Royal Navy, Ben Key, has been fired and stripped of his commission after it was discovered that he had been having an affair with a female subordinate. The Ministry of Defence stated that Key’s behavior did not meet the expected standards, following an investigation triggered by a complaint from the woman’s husband. Adm Tony Radakin, the head of the armed forces, emphasized the importance of high standards of behavior and stated that robust action would be taken against anyone falling short of these standards.

In a statement, Key admitted that his behavior was below the standard he set for himself and the Royal Navy. He expressed regret and accepted the decision to terminate his service and commission. Key, who had stepped back from his duties in May during the investigation, had previously pledged to address sexual misconduct within the Royal Navy.

Sophie Brook, one of the first women to serve in the submarine service, spoke out about experiencing sustained sexual harassment in the navy. Women make up 11.3% of those serving in the navy and the Royal Marines, according to diversity statistics. Key, a married father of three who joined the navy in 1984, was replaced by Gen Sir Gwyn Jenkins as the head of the Royal Navy.
