A 48-year-old sweet shopowner in Mumbai’s Mira Road was assaulted by a group of men affiliated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for not speaking Marathi. Senior MNS leaders defended the action, while the police registered an FIR against seven persons. The incident took place at 'Jodhpur Sweets and Namkeen' in Mira Road on June 29. The shopowner, originally from Rajasthan, stated that the men demanded businesses to operate in Marathi, leading to the assault.
The police identified the accused in the viral video and registered a case under relevant sections of the law. MNS leaders justified the workers' actions, claiming the shopkeeper insulted Marathi. Minister Yogesh Kadam condemned the incident and emphasized respecting Marathi while reporting grievances to the police.
