Carty’s Bar and Lounge Reopens in Mayo Village After Five-Year Closure

A new chapter in the commercial and social life of Knock village begins on Friday night, June 27, as Carty’s Bar and Lounge reopens after being closed for five years, except for a brief period between lockdowns. Michael Carty Jnr, son of Mary and the late Michael Carty, has taken over the business after recent refurbishments. Knock had only one pub, Kilkenny’s, in recent years, with Carty’s being a long-standing establishment in the village.

Carty’s Pub has been a part of Knock for decades, with Michael Jnr's family involved in its operation. Michael took over in 1979 and continued until its closure during Covid. The reopening brings back memories of the excitement surrounding the opening of the new lounge in 1979, just before Pope John Paul's visit.

Many are eager to experience the hospitality at Carty’s Pub and lounge once again. Michael Jnr aims to maintain the family tradition and provide a social outlet for the community. The pub will feature regular music nights and card games, continuing the local traditions. Kieran Jennings will manage the pub, ensuring a warm welcome for visitors.

After the reopening, the Knock Golf Society will host the Michael Carty Memorial Golf tournament at Claremorris Golf Club, followed by celebrations at the pub. The legacy of Carty’s continues in Knock village.
