More than 1,500 people were evacuated from hotels and homes overnight on Crete as firefighters battle a fast-spreading wildfire on the southern coast of the Greek island. Over 230 firefighters are involved in fighting multiple outbreaks, creating a challenging situation for emergency services, according to the Greek fire brigade.
A separate fire also broke out in the Halkidiki region of Greece, with 160 firefighters and 49 vehicles responding to the emergency. The fire service has warned that the country is entering the most critical month of the fire season, with strong winds aiding the fires' spread.
Additionally, wildfires have been reported in Germany and Spain. In Germany, at least two people were seriously injured, and over 100 were evacuated due to a forest fire in Saxony. The extreme weather conditions in Europe have led to wildfires in various countries, including Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Croatia, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s today.
