Nearly 1,000 Britons Embrace Shorter Work Week Permanently After Trial

Nearly 1,000 British workers will adopt a permanently shorter working week after a successful trial of a four-day week and similar changes to traditional working patterns. All 17 British businesses in the six-month trial agreed to continue with either a four-day week or nine days a fortnight, with employees maintaining their full salary.

The trial was conducted by the 4 Day Week Foundation, advocating for shorter working weeks. This trial follows a previous one in 2022, where 56 out of 61 companies reduced their working hours from a five-day week.

The foundation aims to build on the historical shift from a six-day working week to a two-day weekend at the turn of the 20th century. Proponents argue that a four-day week can benefit workers' mental health and businesses' productivity.

Researchers from Boston College found that 62% of workers reported less burnout during the trial, with 45% feeling more satisfied with life. The foundation has conducted multiple trials to show companies how to transition successfully.

The latest trial involved various businesses, including charities and professional services firms, with employee numbers ranging from five to 400. Campaigners are pushing for a government working time council to coordinate policies on this shift.

While the concept faced opposition from the previous government, there is growing support, with Labour ministers showing interest. Companies like BrandPipe have seen success with the four-day week, leading to increased efficiency and financial performance.
