OPPO's Budget Phones to Receive Six Years of Security Updates

OPPO's latest entry-level phones, the A5 4G priced at $259 and A5x 4G priced at $219, will receive three years of operating system updates and six years of security updates, according to local Managing Director Michael Tran.

Six years of security updates for the A5 4G and A5x 4G match what OPPO promises for its mid-tier Reno 13 devices and flagship Find X8 Pro. This is significant as cheaper handsets often lack software support, especially under $300. Some cheaper devices may not even receive a single operating system update, with security updates typically capped at three years.

Tran stated, \"We believe long-term performance shouldn’t be limited to premium price points. That’s why even our most affordable devices, like the new OPPO A5x 4G and A5 4G, come with an extensive software commitment; six years of security updates and three major Android OS upgrades. It’s part of our promise to deliver value that lasts.\"

Manufacturers are improving software longevity for cheaper devices, with OPPO's A5 Pro 5G and Motorola's Moto G75 promising five years of OS updates and six years of security, while Samsung's Galaxy A36 offers six and six. In contrast, Motorola's Moto G56 provides only one year of OS updates and three years of security.

The A5 4G and A5x 4G continue OPPO's focus on durability, featuring \"military-grade\" shock resistance and an IP65 rating for water-resistance. While IP65 doesn't protect against submersion, it prevents damage from low-pressure water jets and heavy rain. Both models lack 5G connectivity.

The A5 4G boasts a 6.67-inch 720p+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 1 chipset, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, and a 6,000mAh battery. It includes a 50MP primary camera, 2MP depth lens, and 5MP selfie camera.

The A5x 4G has slightly lower specs, with 4GB RAM, a 32MP primary camera, and a 5MP selfie camera. Both phones run on OPPO's version of Android 15.

Available now from various retailers, the A5 4G comes in purple or white, while the A5x 4G is available in blue or white.
