House Prosecution Team Seeks Senate Pre-Trial in Sara Duterte Impeachment Case
The House prosecution team is requesting the Senate to start pre-trial procedures in Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment case. Despite awaiting a second certification from the House, the Senate can proceed with pre-trial while the certification is pending. This stage is crucial for marking evidence and listing witnesses.

The House of Representatives’ prosecution team is seeking the Senate's approval to start pre-trial procedures in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment case, according to Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua. Chua mentioned that the Senate is waiting for a second certification from the House to confirm the lawmakers' intent to pursue the case in the 20th Congress.
Chua stated that even though the certification is pending, the Senate can initiate pre-trial proceedings. He mentioned that they are considering filing a motion to proceed with the pre-trial stage, which includes marking evidence and listing witnesses. The specific form of the motion to prompt action from the Senate is still under study.
Vice President Duterte was impeached on February 5 for alleged misuse of funds and threats against officials. The articles of impeachment were sent to the Senate, but were later returned to the House due to constitutional concerns. The House has met the first requirement but awaits the convening of the 20th Congress to fulfill the second requirement.
The impeachment process has faced delays, with the Senate remanding the articles back to the House. Duterte's camp argues that the impeachment is void, citing constitutional limitations. However, House lawmakers maintain that the one-year rule starts after the complaint is referred to the House Committee on Justice.
