Proposed Bill Seeks to Curb Political Dynasties in the Philippines

The Makabayan bloc at the House of Representatives filed a proposed 'Anti-Political Dynasty Act' to prevent family members from holding or running for national and local positions simultaneously. ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Rep. Renee Co filed House Bill 209 on the first day of office for the 20th Congress, which will open session on July 28.

The bill aims to define a political dynasty as a family that concentrates, consolidates, or perpetuates political power by holding public office simultaneously or successively. It prohibits individuals from holding or running for an elective office simultaneously with another within the fourth degree of consanguinity or affinity, whether legitimate or illegitimate, full or half blood.

'No person within the prohibited civil degree of relationship to an incumbent elected official shall immediately succeed to the position of the latter,' the bill stated. If passed, the law would be effective for the next elections and beyond.
