Norway Defeats Switzerland in Women's Euro 2025 Opener

Switzerland took the lead against Norway but fell to a 2-1 defeat on home soil after scoring an own goal on the opening day of the Women's Euro 2025 championship. Norwegian captain Ada Hegerberg netted the equaliser and missed a penalty.

Having lost to Norway twice in the Nations League earlier in the year, the home side dominated the first half. Geraldine Reuteler came close to scoring in the 24th minute, hitting the crossbar, before Nadine Riesen found the net four minutes later.

Hegerberg, who was quiet in the first half, scored with a header nine minutes into the second half. Shortly after, under pressure from Hegerberg, Switzerland's Julia Stierli scored an own goal. Hegerberg missed a penalty in the 70th minute. The Swiss were awarded a penalty, but it was overturned after a VAR review. Norway held on for a victory, placing them at the top of Group A. Finland is second after a 1-0 win over Iceland.
