Japan Enhances 'Megaquake' Preparedness Plan

The Japanese government emphasized the need for better preparation to mitigate the potential impact of a 'megaquake' and reduce the estimated death toll of up to 300,000 people. While predicting earthquakes remains challenging, a government panel slightly raised the likelihood of a major quake in the Nankai Trough within the next three decades. The government's latest assessment in March projected that such an event could result in around 298,000 fatalities and up to US$2 trillion in damages.

In response, the Central Disaster Management Council introduced a preparedness plan in 2014 aimed at decreasing casualties by 80%. However, current measures are expected to only reduce the toll by 20%, prompting the government to issue an updated plan on July 1. The new plan calls for intensified efforts, such as building embankments and evacuation structures, along with more frequent drills to enhance public readiness.
