Chaos at Tour de France: Pogacar Crashes, Protester Disrupts Sprint Finish on Stage 11

Chaos reigned on stage 11 of the Tour de France in Toulouse as the defending champion, Tadej Pogacar, crashed and an anti-Israel protester ran on to the final straight. Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen claimed the stage win ahead of second-placed Mauro Schmid of Switzerland.

A male protester wearing a ‘Israel out of the Tour’ T-shirt ran on to the home straight, as two frontrunners sprinted for victory, before he was restrained by a security officer. The protester, who was also waving a keffiyeh, was about 50m from the finish line. Israel is represented on the Tour through the Israel-Premier Tech team, but no Israeli riders are in the race.

Abrahamsen and Schmid were the first two attackers on the 158.8km race around Toulouse and kept their advantage to the end. Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands crossed in third place, seven seconds back. Pogacar crashed about 5km from the finish but was quickly back on his bike and did not seem hurt.

It was the first career Tour de France stage win for the 29-year-old Abrahamsen as Ireland’s Ben Healy retained the overall race leader’s yellow jersey. The three-time champion Pogacar is second despite his fall. Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel sits third, followed by two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark and American Matteo Jorgenson.

The first of three stages in the Pyrenees begins on Thursday, with the mountainous 180.6km stage 12 from Auch to Hautacam.
