TGA Acknowledges Failure to Curb Rise in Blood Toxicity Cases Linked to Vitamin B6

Australia's medicines regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has acknowledged that its laws have not been effective in curbing the rising cases of blood toxicity linked to vitamin B6, a common over-the-counter supplement. The TGA also recognized that associated effects, such as irreversible nerve damage, are more significant than initially understood.

Vitamin B6, found in various products like foods, energy drinks, and supplements, can lead to serious complications when consumed in excess, including peripheral neuropathy. Clinical pathologist Dr. David Kanowski has observed a surge in people undergoing B6 blood tests, with a notable increase in cases showing high toxicity levels.

The TGA regulates over 1,500 supplements containing B6, with many exceeding the recommended daily amount. Despite recent regulatory changes, concerns persist over the high levels of B6 in products and the lack of clarity on why it is added.

Following pressure to address the issue, the TGA has proposed new recommendations to enhance product labeling and restrict supplements with high B6 content. However, some experts and stakeholders feel that the proposed changes may not go far enough to prevent toxicity incidents.

The TGA is accepting feedback on its proposed changes until July 27, 2025, aiming to make informed decisions to safeguard public health.
