Supreme Court Addresses Mental Health Crisis in Educational Institutions

The Supreme Court highlighted the systemic failure contributing to student suicides in educational institutions. Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued directives to address the crisis nationwide. The 2022 NCRB report revealed 13,044 student suicides out of 1,70,924 total cases in India. The court emphasized the need to address mental health issues among students, especially during exams and academic transitions.

The bench issued 15 guidelines, including optimal student-to-counsellor ratios, mandatory staff training, and establishment of referral protocols. It emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable student groups and integrating mental health education into orientation programs. The court also called for regular career counselling services and a safe campus environment free from harassment.

The Centre was asked to submit a compliance affidavit within 90 days, outlining the progress and recommendations of the National Task Force on student mental health concerns.
