Saudi Arabia and France Lead UN Effort to Recognize Palestinian Statehood

Saudi Arabia and France have opened a three-day conference at the United Nations to recognize Palestinian statehood as part of a peaceful settlement to end the war in Gaza. The conference began after French President Emmanuel Macron announced Paris would recognize the Palestinian government in September to revive peace talks around a two-state solution.

The French foreign minister mentioned that the conference could pave the way for other European countries to acknowledge Palestinian statehood. While specific countries were not named, there is speculation about the United Kingdom's stance on the matter.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister expressed support for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, emphasizing that this is crucial for regional peace. The talks involve 16 countries and delegations, including the UK, Ireland, and the EU.

The UK, although not currently recognizing Palestine, faces pressure to support a diplomatic solution. Over 220 MPs urged the UK government to act on its commitment to a two-state solution. Labour leader Keir Starmer is expected to address the Gaza crisis and work towards recognizing Palestinian statehood.

Starmer is also set to discuss humanitarian aid with Donald Trump and address the crisis in Gaza. Macron's announcement of recognizing Palestinian statehood was met with criticism from Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it a reward for terror.

Israel criticized the Saudi-French-led conference, stating that it does not promote a solution but rather deepens the illusion. The conference organizers were accused of being disconnected from reality by engaging in discussions instead of focusing on dismantling Hamas's activities.
