PM Launches App for Power Users to Submit Meter Readings

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the ‘Apna Meter, Apna Reading’ power smart mobile application to promote transparency in the billing process. The initiative aims to eliminate meter readers in power distribution companies across the country. The current billing system can push consumers into higher billing slabs.

The prime minister highlighted the government's efforts in power sector reforms, including merit-based appointments in Discos' boards and negotiations with independent power producers to reduce electricity prices. He announced the abolition of the Rs35 monthly PTV fee from electricity bills.

The main challenge remains power theft worth Rs500bn annually. The government supports solar power as the cheapest form of electricity. The app allows consumers to take meter readings, ensuring accurate billing and transparency in the process.

According to the Power Division, consumers can upload meter readings through the app, preventing overbilling and reading errors. The system empowers consumers to monitor their billing and receive timely subsidies.
