Witnesses across southeastern U.S. states reported seeing a fireball moving across the sky on June 26. NASA confirmed it was a meteor disintegrating with extreme energy.

The meteor was first spotted at an altitude of 48 miles above Oxford, Georgia, moving southwest at 30,000 miles per hour. It disintegrated 27 miles above West Forest, Georgia, releasing energy equivalent to 20 tons of TNT.

The fireball was produced by a 3-foot asteroidal fragment weighing over a ton. At least 20 fireball events have been tracked globally in 2025 according to NASA.

Residents described feeling the meteor's sonic boom as 'really, really scary.' Some reported hearing booms and experiencing shaking from the event.
