Amando Tetangco Jr.: A Remarkable Banker
Amando Maglalang Tetangco Jr., known for his role as the third governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), now serves as the chairman of SM Investments Corp. With a distinguished career spanning over four decades, he holds numerous executive positions both in the Philippines and internationally.

Amando Maglalang Tetangco Jr., chairman of SM Investments Corp., is well-known as the third governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Born on Nov. 14, 1952, he served as BSP governor for two consecutive six-year terms under two Philippine presidents — Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Benigno Aquino III. He started his career as a central banker on March 25, 1974.
In April 2021, he became the vice chairman and independent director of SM Prime. Currently, he holds director positions at Manila Hotel and Toyota Motor Philippines, and serves as a trustee of various organizations. He is also a member of international advisory boards in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur.
Tetangco represented the Philippines in various international banking forums and chaired several committees. He graduated top of his class from Ateneo de Manila University and completed his Master’s degree in the United States as a BSP scholar.
As a financial manager, Tetangco believed that an excess of money in the economy could lead to inflation. To address this, he implemented the special deposit account (SDA) during his tenure at BSP.
According to him, it is crucial to handle the economy with caution even in favorable conditions.
