New Hole Discovered in Yellowstone National Park Raises Concerns of Potential Eruption

Scientists have discovered a new hole in Norris Geyser Basin at Yellowstone National Park, raising concerns about a potential eruption of the supervolcano. The 13-foot gap formed over several months starting in December 2024. Despite its volcanic nature, the cavity appears as a serene pool with light blue water and white sand, resembling a scene from another planet.

The finding comes shortly after the discovery of a new volcanic vent in Yellowstone, emphasizing the park's status as one of the world's largest active volcanoes. If Yellowstone were to erupt, it could blanket two-thirds of the US with ash, rendering entire states uninhabitable and disrupting air travel.

The newly formed thermal pool, identified as a 'blue water spring,' emits warm, clear water and is believed to have resulted from a hydrothermal explosion between late 2024 and early 2025. Satellite imagery indicates a series of mild explosive events leading to the pool's formation.

Yellowstone, situated beneath a national park spanning Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, houses a magma chamber with molten rock and toxic gases. While concerns about a potential eruption persist, experts suggest that the recent hole does not necessarily signify imminent danger.
